Personality: Burt is a sweet and friendly dog who gets along with humans and other dogs really well. When he first came into our household, he was sensitive to many noises and movements, but quickly adapted to our world, learned our habits, and now is quiet unless someone new arrives or he hears a strange sound. He also has become much more comfortable sleeping anywhere in the house even if no one is in the room. He has recovered well from a significant hip surgery, which has not impacted his ability to play, walk, sleep, or run cautiously. Burt takes treats gently, nudges us with his nose to greet us in the morning, loves to go for walks, and demonstrates puppy traits like chewing (flipflops, handles of bags), though this is beginning to subside with clear communication and a watchful eye. He is a warm and welcoming friend who will bring joy to your household. He is probably best in a family with people around. He has had a couple of accidents out of not knowing how to ask to go out, though these have been minor and infrequent. We take him on leash walks and work with him on walking next to us. He doesn't pull, but he meanders, causing us to trip or him to get tangled. He has not been left alone, however, if 2 or 3 of the 4 of us leave the house, he will whine and bark for quite a while until he finally settles down. He is cautious but gentle with children and may need time to warm up.
History: Burt is living in a foster home with other dogs and people.
Dog/Cat Skills: We do not have a history of Burt being around cats but he does well with other polite dogs. He warms up to them quickly then enjoys their company.
Leash Skills: Burt walks well on a leash.
Medical: Burt had a surgical procedure called a femoral head and neck ostectomy performed on his LEFT hip on 1/7/21 due to a painful disease of the hip joint. This surgery is commonly referred to as an "FHO." This leg should be used nearly normally after a couple of months. While we expect a good to excellent return of rear limb function, it is possible that he may always have a mild limp.
