Personality: Oscar is a social and outgoing cat who thoroughly enjoys his time with people. He approaches readily and will circle you for attention while marching in place excitedly. Oscar is a huge fan of water, especially running water, and would appreciate being offered his favorite drink in several variations. He also loves being pet so much, he'll flop over and offer his belly for admiration; just be sure to look and not touch! This handsome boy loves to lounge, but also has energy in reserve for playing to pass the time.
History: Oscar was transferred in from another shelter.
Cat/Dog Skills: Oscar has not been around other cats and dogs while in our care, but he does have a laid back nature.
Oscar has Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV-positive cats frequently appear healthy for many years and may live a full lifespan with proper veterinary and preventive care.
Oscar also has a history of drinking a lot of water and urinating large amounts in his litter box. By process of elimination, it has been determined that Oscar most likely has Diabetes Insipidus (DI). Because DI causes urine to be dilute, it is important for Oscar to have access to fresh water at all times, and to have access to multiple large, clean litter boxes. Without access to freshwater, Oscar can become dehydrated very quickly.
Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare disorder that causes an imbalance of fluids in the body. Affected cats are constantly thirsty and drink large amounts of water, causing them to urinate large amounts of dilute urine. Though the name is similar, DI is NOT related to more commonly known Diabetes Mellitus (DM), which affects insulin and blood sugar metabolism.
Oscar is doing well with a normal appetite, a stable weight, and he stays hydrated by drinking water on his own. DI is a lifelong condition, but there are potential treatments available in either eye drop or injectable form. Oscar's new family should provide his medical records to their family veterinarian, and they are encouraged to speak to their family veterinarian to explore options for advanced diagnostics or treatments.
Oscars care is sponsored by Nithya Ravi and Ann Rohrbach.
